| Pristine conditions were the order of the day for Falls Creek’s annual Big Air event held at Ruined Castle Terrain Park on Saturday. The weather held out for a spectacular display with the 43 athletes throwing down on two jumps – a 40 and 45 foot kicker. With a fresh new format and the very popular finals jam session, spectators were entertained all day with the strong talent in competition. Featuring a huge local representation, with athletes also travelling from Hotham, Buller and Perisher, the new jam format meant finalists were able to session the jump then nominate three scoring jumps. The best two scores counted towards their final tally. The finals were extremely close with skier Watkin McLennan from Mount Buller pipping Jodan Cook for gold by less than half a point. McLennan took the lead with huge Switch and Regular 9s. Cook finished second, his Misty Flip 7 super corked with a tweaked nose grab earning him Best Trick for the day. Falls Creek's Terrain Park Institute head coach Jerome Lambert, from France, came in third. First place in the Men’s Open Snowboard category went to Falls Creek Terrain Park crew leader Mat Galina, from Canada, taking the lead with a huge Back 7 Japan and consistent deep landings. Former winner and local boy Kieran McLaughlin took home second place with an impressive Switchback 7. Third place went to local Park Builder Matto Smith, from New Zealand. Jade McJannett placed first in the Women’s Open Snowboard division with a clean Front 5. In second place was Rachelle Potts, and Lizzay Canters came in third. Galina and McLennan both took home more than $2000 in cash and prizes. McJannett was stoked on her prize winnings of more than $1500, including prizes. The coveted peer-voted Rider’s Choice Awards went to skier Dhanu Sherpa who travelled in from Perisher, and for the snowboarders the very popular former titleholder Mikey “The Cat” Rosalky. Twelve year old Bailey Johnson from Mount Hotham won Best Grommet. The awards for Biggest Air went to an impressive display from crowd favourite boarder Thomas “TC” Clairs and young Team Buller Rider Ollie Immurs on skis. All finalists took home a swag of gear from Dragon and Skull Candy, with an array of prizes for all competitors also provided by local labels Nine22 and Epic. The much anticipated Dragon After Party kicked on late into the night with further giveaways for all in attendance. Following the presentations, Carl Lynch headed up festivities with special guest DJ Bags hitting the decks for a full house at the Frying Pan Inn. The new format was extremely well received by competitors making for an entertaining day for all involved throughout. Many thanks to the Falls Creek Grooming Team, Terrain Park Crew, Race and Events Team and Master of Ceremonies Andrew “Thomo” Thomson for a hugely successful event. Mad props also to event sponsors The Frying Pan Inn, Coca Cola, Dragon and Skull Candy. Falls Creek looks forward to seeing everyone back here again for Stylewars on August 21-24! |
