Give your little shredder the snow experience of a lifetime with lessons!

Posted: Sunday 20th August 2023

Kids are the future slopestars of Falls Creek and we want to ensure they learn the correct technique and skills from the get-go! The best way for your kids to develop their skills on the slopes is with a lesson from Falls Creek Snowsports School. We offer two key programs for children, with Snowclub available for 3–6-year-olds and Junior Workshop from 7-14.

How many lessons should my child take?

We highly recommend children participate in a minimum of 3 days, but ideally more, to build strong foundations for skiing or boarding, both in technique and mountain rules and etiquette. Our programs are designed with this in mind, and longer participation ensures children get the most benefit and skill development.

Not only that, our lessons are fun and engaging for all skill levels, with the key goal to create an all-rounded snow holiday experience for children. This includes learning snow sports and progressing skills, while meeting new friends, team bonding and just general fun on the snow.

Snowclub and Junior Workshop Programs

For children participating in Snowclub, our team of qualified instructors ensures the day is as enjoyable as possible for all children. In addition to learning to ski in a cordoned-off area before progressing to the slopes, children can also relish in visits from Pete the Snow Dragon and plenty of fun snow games!

Junior Workshop lessons have a similar format to adult group lessons, where more time is spent out on the slope progressing and developing skills, while learning mountain rules and safety. Plus, children will be in a safe and supportive team environment, led by a qualified instructor.

Across both programs, our accredited instructors use kid friendly language and activities to progress their skills in a fun yet learning-focused environment.

Skill progression for children

Like any sport, Snowsports take time and dedication to master and progress, with new things to learn every time you hit the slopes. Our team of accredited instructors are there to guide children to practice these skills on appropriate terrain choices for their ability level, to ensure they learn in a supportive yet challenging environment.

To give you a guide for how long skills can take to progress, a 3-6 year old child may take over 3 days to stop, whereas a 12-year-old may learn to stop rather quickly. In contrast, a 12-year-old may take years to learn to parallel ski whereas a 3-6-year-old may pick it up rather quickly. For snowboarding, it may take 3 or more days to learn and progress before comfortably riding down a full slope.

From our instructor's experience, children attending consecutive lessons throughout a snow holiday enables a strong likelihood of advancing their technical skills in the correct way, without picking up bad habits. There is much more to skiing or boarding than just making it to the bottom of the slope. Safety for themselves and others, skill progression and control on a variety of terrain play a large part in ensuring children have a great experience on snow.
